Job Description
The Denver City Attorney’s Office seeks an Entry Assistant City Attorney for the Civil Claims Unit of the Litigation Section of the Department of Law. An Entry Assistant City Attorney provides legal counsel to City officials and employees, and representation in the defense of civil lawsuits before trial and appellate courts. We are seeking an entry-level attorney, ideally with some previous civil litigation experience.
The Civil Claims Unit handles all personal injury and property damage claims, as well as tort, civil rights and constitutional claims brought against the City and County of Denver. The attorneys in this unit regularly appear in state and federal trial and appellate courts.
The Denver City Attorney’s Office is one of the largest law firms in Colorado, with over 90 attorneys and approximately 90 staff members comprised of paralegals, victim advocates, and other support and supervisory staff members. It may have the most diverse practice of any law firm in Colorado. Clients include the Mayor; the Auditor; the Clerk and Recorder; City Council; and all city agencies, departments, offices, boards, commissions and authorities. Job Responsibilities:
The responsibilities for this position include:
Prepares routine cases for litigation and represents the City in those proceedings.
Provides legal advice.
Performs routine legal research and assists with research of more complex legal issues, under the supervision of more experienced attorneys.
Assists attorneys working in specialized areas with litigation, research and related activities.
Drafts motions, briefs and pleadings.
Assists with drafting and responding to discovery.
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Graduation from college of law with attainment of a J.D. or an LL.B. degree
Preferred Experience (must be demonstrated on application/resume):

At least one year of experience in state and/or federal court litigation, including:
Personal injury claims;
Property damage claims;
Tort claims;
Civil rights claims; and
Constitutional claims.
Strong research and written and oral advocacy skills.
